The samoyed named Striker won the working group in the prestigious New York show, an “unheard” of repeat that gave him a shot at Best in Show.

Striker’s confidence was palpable as he trotted across the stage, lapping up applause from adoring fans with an ear-to-ear grin, his fluffy, snow-white coat blowing in the wind.

It’s the second year in a row Striker has been crowned top working dog, clinching him a spot in the final “Best in Show” category. To win the category twice is “unheard of,” says owner Marc Ralsky of Toronto. The top prize at Westminster ultimately went to Trumpet, a droopy-eared, chestnut-coloured, irresistible bloodhound — the first of his breed to claim the top seat in a competition that’s been dubbed the Super Bowl of dog shows. Winston, a French bulldog, came in second.

“All the planets have to align in terms of the dog and conditioning. All of those things have to go in your favour and it takes a lot of work. And he did it.”
