The award-winning actress Emma Thompson will be stepping into the role of the frightening Miss Trunchball, a role that is typically played by a man on stage. Taking on the title role of Matilda is Alisha Weir, while the role of Miss Honey will be played by Lashana Lynch. Matilda's neglectful and shallow parents - Mr and Mrs Wormwood - will be played by Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough, respectively.As the trailer shows, the look and feel of the film is markedly different to the 1996 film which starred Mara Wilson as an American Matilda. However, everything from the costuming to the choreography, bears a striking resemblance to the stage show.
Matilda the Musical first hit the West End in 2011, where it still runs today at the Cambridge Theatre in London. As well as receiving widespread critical acclaim and box office sales, the musical scooped up seven Olivier Awards in 2012, which was, at the time, the most awards won by a single show. The next year, the show transferred to Broadway and closed after 1,555 performances in 2017.
The film adaption of the musical will be coming to cinemas in the UK and Ireland on 2 December, just in time for Christmas. Then, over the holidays, Netflix will release it on streaming for international audiences, though the UK and Ireland will not be included in this release.
