The actor behind Vecna, the new villain in StrangerThings, talks those FreddyKrueger comparisons: 'Not too much Freddy, because the way Robert played Freddy, there was a chaotic energy. With Vecna, I saw this resentment, this really built-up anger.'

Stranger Things season 4 Vecna actor Jamie Campbell Bower explains the similarities between his character and Freddy Krueger. After months of anticipation, Stranger Things season 4 finally landed on Netflix last week, treating viewers to a return to Hawkins, Indiana, and more 1980s sci-fi horror from creators the Duffer Brothers. The latest season boasts longer episode runtimes than previous seasons and a terrifying new villain with Vecna.

Named after the iconic Dungeons & Dragons character of the same name, Vecna proves to be a major threat to the residents of Hawkins and the core group of youngsters. The character was first unveiled in the trailer for Stranger Things season 4, hauntingly declaring that"You have lost," and hinting at a major confrontation brewing between the evil forces of the Upside Down and the regular world.

"I was like, 'Yeah, Hellraiser, I'll take a bit of that, a little bit of Freddy [Krueger].' But not too much Freddy, because the way Robert [Englund] played Freddy, there was a chaotic energy. With Vecna, I saw this resentment, this really built-up anger. You know when you get so angry, you start shaking you're trying to hold it together? That's what I took."

The first three seasons of Stranger Things all featured exceptional villains, but Vecna does mark a departure from the show's previous antagonists due to his more man-like appearance and his ability to speak. The Demogorgon from Stranger Things season 1, for example, seemed to operate on more animal instinct whereas Vecna is calculating and articulate.

Stranger Things season 4 has clearly taken inspiration from A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Robert Englund, the original actor for Krueger, even makes an appearance in the show as Victor Creel. With the upcoming season 5 of Stranger Things set to mark the conclusion of the show, the Duffer Brothers are evidently pulling out all the stops when it comes to creating their villains, with Vecna being the most terrifying yet.

It looks a little more Skeletor than Freddy

I would love an Elm Street remake with actual high school aged actors . The stranger things cast would be amazing.

This new monster is very creepy and intense. Unlike anything we’ve ever seen before from this series. Really excited for July 1. StrangerThings4

Stranger Things: Meet Joe Quinn, the Englishman Behind Eddie MunsonIt was suspiciously easy for Joe Quinn, who plays the season four standout Eddie Munson, to land a role on StrangerThings: 'Normally, things are pretty gladiatorial in this game.' He looks just like Robert Downey JR in the 1980's.
