A Dene filmmaker based in Vancouver says he was 'disappointed' and 'close to tears' when security at the Cannes Film Festival blocked him from walking the red carpet while dressed in a pair of moccasins.

A Dene filmmaker says he was “disappointed” and “close to tears” when security at the Cannes Film Festival blocked him from walking the red carpet while dressed in a pair of moccasins.

Kelvin Redvers, a Vancouver producer who attended Cannes as part of a delegation of six Indigenous filmmakers, says he was refused entry to the carpet for Valeria Bruni Tedeschi's “Les Amandiers” last Sunday because festival staff didn't approve of his traditional Indigenous footwear. He says he was only allowed to enter the space if he swapped out his moccasins for a pair of formal shoes they deemed appropriate.

Redvers obliged, but he says he hopes speaking out about his experiences pressures Cannes organizers to rethink what counts as formal wear when it comes to representing different cultures on their red carpets.Cannes is notoriously strict around formal wear on its evening red carpet - requiring a black tie for men and evening gowns for women - however some traditional formal wear is accommodated, such as Scottish kilts and Indian saris.

“Actually, that made me really happy, because I think I will continue to wear these at times when they seem most fitting.”

It has nothing to do with race. It is an international event and there is a code for everything including the dress.

Wtf is wrong with this world. That man can wear whatever in the hell he wants to wear is there a posted sign that says shines black shoes only. This world is gone to fuck

He just found out that he’s not in Trudeau’s Canada.

Molehill, Mountain. Mountain, Molehill.

Thanks for this winning comment and ask for more exposure for your moccasins and their maker! You made my day!

Mu guess is that The people who are in Cannes might be unfamiliar with traditional indigenous clothing. It seems like media is doing everything they can to pit 1 group against the other.

😂😂😂

deborahc613 Festival_Cannes really?

Awefull

deborahc613 What?

Disgraceful decision!

Once a racist colonialist will always be a racist colonialist

Maybe those were his glass slippers. But yet women can go to award shows practically naked. The world is becoming weaker and whiny.

Yeah, because moccasins aren't formal wear ... It's like going to a library wondering why you got kicked out for constantly yelling and then crying foul when you get removed ... rules are rules regardless of person's indigenous status or lack thereof

So this wasn’t a case of maliciousness or discrimination it was a case of the organizers just not “knowing”, it turned into an educational experience with a good ending. It sounds like a very positive experience.

deborahc613 When in Rome...

If I ever go, I hope they accept my traditional garb of pyjamas and big fuzzy bunny slippers. woof

Did he do this on purpose just to get this result? There is probably a dress code and he puts himself above everyone else. Typical attention getter!!

When in Rome...

Seems like an intentional publicity stunt to me. But who cares about the 'Cannes movie festival' anyways?

Uh oh... he deserves an apology

SarcasticHoney

That is such BS. Why are people so ignorant anymore?
