Weird Al Yankovic reacts to a joke about him in Stranger Things season 4. The kids from Hawkins are back for a new adventure in the latest season of Netflix’s hugely popular sci-fi series. Which of course means the 1980s references are once again coming in fast and heavy.
Stranger Things 4 indeed moves the action a few years ahead to 1986, a fact that is reflected in the show’s fashion, hair styling and pop culture references. But of course there are some ‘80s artifacts that remain evergreen on Stranger Things, like Dungeons & Dragons, which continues to hold a central place in the lives of Dustin and Mike even though they’re now in high school.
Dustin and Mike’s scene partner Eddie Munson is of course a new character in Stranger Things 4, but he makes a huge impression right out of the gate as the leader of the D&D-playing Hellfire Club . A guitar player himself, Eddie’s musical tastes of course run more toward the heavy metal side of things, and the character indeed represents a great chance to send up the whole ‘80s metalhead persona while goofing on the very ‘80s idea of a high school student who appears to be at least 20.
Given his headbanger look and the very ‘80s guitar seen hanging in his room, Eddie is probably not a fan of Weird Al Yankovic. But clearly he can appreciate a bold fashion choice, and it was indeed a bold choice for a high school kid to wear a Weird Al t-shirt back in the ‘80s. Nowadays of course Weird Al is considered a beloved pop culture figure and there could be nothing more retro-cool than wearing his t-shirt.
