Supersized episode of long\u002Drunning show won over this burger virgin, so imagine how fans will like it

The supersized episode – 102 minutes long and years in the making, thanks in part to COVID – opens with a long-ago murder, the who/what/whyness of which will eventually push the plot forward. But of greater immediate concern to the Belcher family of burgeristas is when a sinkhole opens in front of their restaurant. Already behind on the rent and facing repossession of their kitchen equipment by the bank, they’re suddenly denied any chance to make money.

Bob reacts by slipping into a low-grade panic. But loyal customer Teddy comes up with a mobile food cart option that they can take to the local amusement park, though they risk the ire of the licensed food sellers there. Linda decides to dress up as a burger in a bikini to help attract customers.Article content

Their kids, meanwhile, find themselves trying to solve the murder. Who killed Cotton Candy Dan? Why is Felix , brother of their eccentric landlord, dressing in a sailor suit and acting so strange? And why is Sgt. Bosco of the local police so ineffectual in helping them out? Storylines will collide amid several musical numbers, some truly atrocious puns, and the sorts of obsessions that often consume the Belcher offspring: Tina is lusting after a boy and anxious to ask him out before the end of the school year; Gene has created a new musical instrument; and young Louise has been called a baby by a schoolmate, and wants to prove her wrong.

There’s also some absurdist humour, much of which had me giggling. And it’s hard to hate a movie that has such fun with wordplay, whether it’s background signs like the physical therapy joint called Sprain Sprain Go Away, or someone describing the flight of a pair of lovers as a “he fled, she fled situation.”Bob’s Burgers: The Movie opens May 27 in cinemas.
