From 'Men' to 'The Lost Daughter,' Jessie Buckley is drawn to characters in tough situations: 'I don't want to be vanilla, I want to be provoked.'

, which centers on a group of Mennonite women who have been sexually abused. In our oceanside conversation she reflected on the vulnerability of playing Harper in, working with Kinnear in this unusual way, and why she’s gravitating towards these films exploring what it’s like to be a woman in the world.

I didn't, I never really do. I kind of don't know anything. All you try and do is try and build the world of it inside you as much as you can, so that you can kind of just experience it, and let it throw up questions to you. And especially with this film and what it's relating to, there's nothing finite in it. Even in rehearsals we never really read the script and pinpointed, "Oh, this beat is this.” It was just a conversation.

Well, I think I instinctively, immediately, I felt like I had to kind of move everything and just kind of stand in the middle of this, and almost experience it in the same way that I'm going to experience it as Harper. Not necessarily put a character on top to protect me from it — just be very, very open and raw and have quite a visceral skin contact with it. I've never really used my own accent in something, and I wasn't sure what that would feel like.
