Morbius has flopped at the box office, but this could mean Sony will be keener than ever to pursue a third Amazing Spider-Man movie with Andrew Garfield. Critics and audiences alike have uniformly rejected the Jared Leto led Sony Marvel movie, which is set in Sony's Spider-Man universe, shared with the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, Venom, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
Jared Leto stars in Morbius as Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist obsessed with curing his debilitating disease using the blood of vampire bats. This has the unintended consequence of transforming him into a vampire with an insatiable blood lust, just like his comic book counterpart. The film has been met with significant criticism, and currently holds a dismal 17% critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes.
The incredibly positive response to Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the online discourse that the film redeemed Garfield's Spider-Man also makes his return likely. Many social media users have made it clear that there is demand for Sony to make the hypothetical Amazing Spider-Man 3 after the multiverse shenanigans of Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man make a triumphant return to cinema screens.
Of course, there is always the possibility that Garfield's Spider-Man could be weaved into the existing universe, alongside Venom and Michael Morbius. It seems more likely than Sony bringing back Tobey Maguire from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, as that trilogy has much more unique style, typical of Raimi. With the lingering negativity towards The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony could instead bring in Garfield in the next Venom movie, using the multiverse or Spider-verse to explain it.
I liked Garfield as Spider-Man but his movies really weren't that great. I'd much rather see Sony just make a live action Miles Morales movie instead.
It made profit so I wouldn't say it was a failure, I actually really enjoyed the movie.
