Viola Davis recalled an exchange with an unnamed Hollywood director who once called her by his maid's name: 'Those microaggressions happen all the time.'

reflected on some of the racist treatment she's experienced in Hollywood over the course of her career and the constant stream of microaggressions she continues to face.discussion at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival on Thursday, recalling a Hollywood director who once called her by the wrong name. She explained that despite knowing this man, whom she declined to name, “for ten years,” he had called her by his maid's name. Davis explained, “I had a director who did that to me...

The four-time Oscar winner also spoke about the limited roles available for Black actresses in Hollywood and the stereotypical storylines they're still being offered in films. “If I wanted to play a mother whose family lives in a low-income neighborhood and my son was a gang member who died in a drive-by shooting, I could get that made,” Davis said.

Davis also cited racism as at the root cause of those types of projects being turned down. “A lot of it is based in race. It really is,” she said. “Let's be honest. If I had my same features and I were five shades lighter, it would just be a little bit different. And if I had blonde hair, blue eyes and even a wide nose, it would be even a little bit different than what it is now.” The actress continued, "We could talk about colorism. We could talk about race.

That's another falsehood. Someone was better suited to the roles come off it people

Can she ever stop over victimizing herself and just get on to doing her job? She's always talking about how someone 'oppressed' her in some way. Past, present, or future. I mean.. gurl you're talented. Get over yourself. It's getting to feel really pathetic...

violadavis is a badass artist and super talented. WTF would call her by ANY other name let alone the maid? UGH….fellow white folk - really?

Why hide these? 🤔

oh most definitely! i don't think she's exaggerating one iota. colorism is biproductive of racism.

violadavis could've kept this to her self. But it illustrates how someone even if her stature & accomplishments is still looked upon. Now, imagine what regular folks deal with on a daily basis - with ZERO voice!

You dismiss it as being too sensitive or whining b/c more than likely you too regularly display these aggressions - consciously or other wise.

To those of you in this thread that dismiss this story. You minimize her experience & blow it off because it's never happened to you & you're part of the greater problem.

She really should name names, she's huge & this wouldn't hurt her career. These men don't deserve to get away with it anymore. We sit here as new Cosbys, Weinsteins, Hefners & Polanskis are currently victimizing a new generation. We need to name names. Hollywood

Boo Hoo violadavis! Cry me a river!

Not the yt ppl being obtuse in the comments 🙄

Someone nees attention. And in 2022 the best way is for successful millionaire actors to cry racism.

(literal gasp) NO. she knows to not say that name. that man would have to go into hiding.

This isn’t Unique to the black experience. All poc go through this. There was literally an episode of the office that all Asians look alike.

She’s gonna freak out when she hears this happens to white people too. I’ve been called someone else’s name so many times. The only difference is I laugh when it happens instead of being offended

Bet she has got some roles for same reason. BuzzFeed wants me to feel bad that actors don't get every part they audition for and Vanity Fair wants me to feel bad for rich and famous actor who has to deal with jerks sometimes. My Twitter 'For You' seriously doesn't know me at all.

Speak your Truth violadavis We must all share our egregious stories for the World to hear!FreedomOfSpeech poetrycommunity WritingCommunity tylerperry 🙏🏽👑 Determined to evoke change!✊🏽

My mom calls me my brothers name on occasion, so… meh..

So the producer is racist, or maybe it was just an honest slip up and he really loves her. I wonder if there is a study about this sort of thing?

WTH Who does this to Her

Jfc all the comments of “I call my kid by my dogs name all the time 🤪” as if it’s not a totally different thing to mix up your black maid and a clients name vs mixing up your relatives and a family pets name. Yup. Totally the same thing and you’re not all brain dead 👍

I've deep respect for violadavis. We've no way of knowing whether this director made a mistake or did it intentionally. Either way, it's boorish behavior & the director should be deeply embarrassed. A 'microagression' though?

Geezo, get a grip!! I call my dog my daughter's name, and vice versa!! Better lead me away in 'cuffs to Woke jail!!

If she’s not going to name them she needs to keep the story 🥴

Whats so offensive about being accidentally called by the maid's name? Would it be as offensive if he called her by the name of someone in another profession? Do we see maids as being a lower class of people? Just trying to understand so I'm asking you Twitter experts.

Oh no

So how long will it be before Twitter finds out the directors name?

There’s definitely a Hollywood agenda to keep the image of Black actresses as the perpetual Hattie McDaniels. Unless, of course they’re Biracial. It’s so obvious.

At this stage of Viola's career, why isn't she collaborating w/directors & producers of color to create their own projects? People create projects based on their povs. If it's their money, they call the shots. This is how the movie business has operated.

So funny that she is compared to a working class person and finds it insulting.

My grandmother occasionally called me Jennifer. She had no grandchildren named Jennifer.

No one else has ever done this? Really? really? Get over it!

Nobody wants to go toe to toe with a forehead like that. Relax.

I have memory issues so I have a hard time remembering names with faces that I don’t associate with regularly. It’s not about skin, it’s about just plain memory is going. Old age sucks.

Every dark skinned black woman has had a microaggressive exchange with a yt man. I was a cute pick a ninny to an executive at my corporate job.

smolletting

We 👱🏻‍♀️🧔🏻 need to stop being surprised at the daily experience of Black people, like they haven’t been telling us forever. PS, this is not their problem, it is OUR problem.

and we wonder why hollywood is dying. articles like this

don’t be shy. Drop the name.

Was his maids name Viola

This is aggression to the maid, why feel offended?

Maybe it is because he loves her?

Yes, because directors only call actors by the name of their characters to intentionally bully people. It's literally the only possible reason. And they only do this to b1ack people. everythingisracist

I just think Mrs V. Davis is Beautiful

So she’s belittling the maid?

I would’ve been called Samuel L Jackson for my response to that director… 👀💯

If you mention the story, why not name the executive? I know why. She's pandering but also wants to not mess up her bag.

Name them all.

These comments just show how trash and naive white ppl are. A white man who calls a black woman by the name of his black house maid. Repeatedly at that. The privilege to be white and empty headed on why certain things matter is astonishing.

My wife mistakenly called me by our Dogs name. Same or no?

Sometimes I will call one of my kids the dogs name, happens.

Don’t complain if you ain’t gonna name names. Move on

violadavis is one of the most privileged people humanity has ever known, she is in the top 0.1% of society, however to stay relevant she has to try gaslight us all into thinking she's actually a marginalized victim....how do people fall for this!

Name him.

She didn't say it happened once. She said he always called her Louise over the course of a ten year acquaintance. Yall ain't shit.

It’s sad that happened to her but I hate it when celebrities have these revelations and don’t name who did it. You’re just as guilty cause you’re covering for this person

Imagine thinking you’re oppressed because someone has a brain fart. Being a perpetual victim of literally no crime must be exhausting!

This is about all you have to worry about when you're a multi-millionaire and the preferred demographic in society. Pampered elitist narcissist.
