On March 13, 2020, just moments after the multidisciplinary artist Miranda July learned that the world was shutting down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she received a telemarketing call from, she would soon find out, a trans woman in the Philippines named Richie Jay Benedicto, offering services for self-published authors.
Within the pages, selections from their Instagram conversations are printed verbatim, along with images that Benedicto shares in response to July’s assignments. They begin simply, with July suggesting they share images of themselves bowing in front of someone or something that they love. July sent a photo of her kneeling on the floor bowing in front of a Velvet Underground & Nico record, and Benedicto replied with a photo of herself bowing down in front of money.
