Catherine Called Birdy fans — see an ~exclusive~ first scene from the PrimeVideo adaptation of the YA novel 🐦

) has a couple favorite curse words from the upcoming adaptation of the classic historical YA novel of the same name: “god's thumbs,” for starters. Also: “death by frying pan!” She's yet to use them in real life, but they're tucked away, waiting for the opportune moment to stun and baffle.

Birdy does her fair share of stunning and baffling in her small Medieval English village of Stonebridge in the year 1290. Bella, 18, was drawn to Birdy's story for the chaos — she's a raucous 14-year-old who is set to be married off for money so that her father can save their manor. Birdy, who would rather not like this to happen, is far more concerned with skipping around town eavesdropping and wreaking havoc on all who cross her path.

“Her recklessness and joy and passion doesn’t fit with the societal role she’s been assigned,” Bella tells. “[The film] is about her fighting these customs with justified rage and humor and open-mindedness. She’s basically trying to forge her own path in a world stacked against her in that regard.” The project is written and directed by Lena Dunham, who has loved the novel since she was a kid; her adaptation has been in the works for 13 years. At last, will come to theaters September 23 and stream globally on Prime Video October 7. Cast include Bella Ramsey, Billie Piper, Andrew Scott, Isis Hainsworth, Joe Alwyn, and more.

Dunham is excited for the novel to reach a new audience, both through the film and a redistribution of the book, which first came out in 1996. She was drawn to the story for the way it shows characters pushing back against expectations and society and embracing individuality. “I wanted to highlight this girl who was living in the wrong time. If she was living in 2022, she would be a pretty classic tomboy or able to explore the gender binary, she’d be able to play all the sports she wanted.
