Titans Star Shares His Idea For A Very Different Nightwing Movie

The actor who plays Dick Grayson on the HBO Max drama Titans, shares his idea for a very different Nightwing movie. One of the most popular characters in not just the DC Universe, but the Batman family, is the original Robin a.k.a. Dick Grayson. While he began as the Boy Wonder, Dick's popularity comes primarily from his evolution into Nightwing, as Batman's former sidekick became his own hero.

Since 2018, Titans has followed Dick's journey in leaving his Robin days behind and escaping Batman's shadow. By the end of Titans season 2, Dick officially took on the Nightwing moniker and came full circle as the leader of the super-team. After moving to HBO Max for season 3, Titans has become one of the platform's big original DC series, as the streaming service handed it a season 4 renewal in 2021.

"But I think what would be interesting to me is a younger or older Dick Grayson. Someone who’s like Bruce Wayne’s age, you know… or 45 or 50. So like an actor 15 years my senior to kind of portray the character and what it’s been like fighting crime for so long. Or a younger teenager and you go through the storyline of losing his parents, and what that means for him, and training with Bruce, and kind of psychological trauma that he faces.

In February 2017, Warner Bros. began developing a Nightwing film by The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay. Bill Dubuque was originally brought on to pen the screenplay, while McKay has provided various updates over the last few years. The last time the filmmaker shared any new information about the Nightwing movie project was in June 2021, when McKay stated that he believed the DCEU movie could still happen.

Having a Nightwing movie follow an older, more seasoned Dick Grayson would be refreshing, as that has never been done before in live-action. Not a lot of DC properties outside the original comics have followed what Dick's life looked like during his later years, and it would make for a unique feature.
