Top Gun: Maverick: Everything you need to know about the new film that has a near perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes

"After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him.

Interestingly, he's one of the only original cast members returning to the film. He's joined by Val Kilmer who reprised his role as Iceman, who has since risen up the ranks to Vice Admiral.

We're also introduced to a brand-new set of fighter pilots, including Miles Teller as Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, Goose's adult son; Monica Barbaro as Phoenix; Manny Jacinto as Fritz; Glenn Powell as Hangman; Danny Ramirez as Fanboy; and Jay Ellis as Payback.He is the first Black actor to play the lead role.Rotten TomatoesHowever, some critics have pointed out that the film still leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to women's representation.

“Now it’s Maverick in charge and there is just the one female pilot under his instruction: Phoenix, a thin role for Monica Barbaro. McGillis has evidently not been invited back and her character is never mentioned. The unmarried Maverick’s love interest this time around is a nice woman who runs the local bar, an entirely thankless part for Jennifer Connelly.
