Actress, screenwriter and director Kay Mellor has died aged 71, it has been announced.
She was known for creating and writing the ITV series Fat Friends - which helped launch James Corden's career.A Rollem Productions spokesman said: "It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely and sudden passing of our beloved friend, mentor and colleague Kay Mellor on Sunday 15 May 2022.
Mellor began her career writing plays, worked on Coronation Street and created the award-winning children's drama Children's Ward.Fat Friends aired from 2000-2005 and gave a young Corden his first major acting role. It also starred Ruth Jones, Sheridan Smith and Alison Steadman.
Such sad news, I had the pleasure of working for her on Fat Friends, she was an inspiration, her writing had such a realness that let everyone climb onboard. My thoughts are with her family and friends.
Very sorry to hear the hugely talented Kay Mellor has passed away. R.I.P. Kay, you will be missed by many.
A shame she discovered James Corden
Oh wow, such an amazing writer and I love her dramas. Children’s Ward, Playing the Field, Band of Gold and The Syndicate are favourites of mine. RIP, what a loss.
