Given that the Eurovision was originally designed to bring Europeans together through the medium of television, last night’s result made perfect sense, writes SineadCrowley

A female soldier carrying a child past burned out cars and bombed buildings, and a rapper performing in the rubble.

Last night’s Eurovision was supposed to follow a certain script and casual viewers might think it did just that – Ukraine were tipped to win the public vote and in the end they did, by a wide margin.Eurovision is many things, a spectacle, a festival, a major television event, the backdrop for house parties and, of course, a song contest.

This year, however, the country took the contest very seriously, sending Freddie Mercury soundalike and TikTok star Sam Ryder with a decent song and a genuine air of enthusiasm. But just because Ryder deserved his excellent showing, that doesn’t mean Ukraine won the overall award purely because of the sympathy factor. 'Stefania' is a catchy folk/rap number and Kalush Orchestra, with their passionate delivery and memorable costumes, would I suspect have been dancing around the top ten even without the ongoing political situation.

Given that the competition was originally designed to bring Europeans together through the medium of television, last night’s result made perfect sense. SineadCrowley Not when it was in Israel. Some lives are more important that others.

SineadCrowley When will Palestinians get to the Eurovision and when will Israel be banned from it

SineadCrowley The Eurovision has to be one of the biggest piles of shite on television, what a complete utter waste of money, its up there with the Northern Ireland assembly for a brass neck

SineadCrowley

SineadCrowley Ukraine would have winning if it was the worse song ever too grace eurovision it was planned along with e.u in the blocks ireland will never win again except we come up with a good ballad other than that its a joke

SineadCrowley Eurovision shows a European Public's two fingers to the Putin attack on Ukraine. That song is going to be great craic when it gets played in a nightclub I can imagine. Its powerful in its unique way. My Mum wants her pink hat back, don't know how it ended up in the Ukraine!

This TV show was always all about politics.

SineadCrowley Eurovision Song Contest well past it's sell by date by years.Dominated by political or bloc voting. Winning on merit is just a thing of the past.Should just rename it the Eurovision Sympathetic Contest and vote based on sentiment, rather than quality or originality of act.

SineadCrowley Yup that will surly help the Ukrainians in besieged cities sleep better! A crappy “song contest” stands United with them 🙄

SineadCrowley Eurovision is not a singing contest Its all political The aims of the Eurovision is that the event is of a non-political nature The Eurovision win last night was no different than Eir winning (bought) the award for excellence in customer service last Feb

SineadCrowley SineadCrowley isn’t it great that the results of the Israeli jury was broadcast from Jerusalem, the occupied capital of Palestine . Palestinians were ethnically cleansed from their homeland by Zionists most of whom are Europeans Nakba74

SineadCrowley I think it was the worst Eurovision I've ever seen, music wise and the way it was presented Eurovision2022

SineadCrowley What was the point in having it if it was gonna be given to Ukraine?what a load of bollocks

SineadCrowley The emotion was palpable & Twitter was lit. It was really a great night. Best Eurovision I have seen. I absolutely loved the UK song on first hearing but hand on heart I loved the Ukrainian song too. It was heartwarming to spend a Saturday night seeing Europe unite with music. ❤️

SineadCrowley It did show solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

SineadCrowley No it was a song contest 🤦🏻‍♂️ Kind of drove an individuals countrys pride, a nationalist event really Now it’s a political shit show based on alliances and not the song

SineadCrowley In the public vote almost every country gave Ukraine maximum 12 votes even Israel.....

SineadCrowley No, it was virtue-signalling of the highest order. Sad for all those singers who gave it their all & done so in vein. The result was always going to go to Ukraine. If Ukraine had walked on stage and stood in silence for 3mins, they still would have won. Eurovision

SineadCrowley Does...does Sinead Crowley thinks there's been a shortage of discussion about Ukraine, or of Ukrainian (nationalist) voices on the airwaves?
