rebates topping a billion dollars. A chunk of that money goes to renting expensive cameras and related equipment. The company’s main office and storage center sit in a strip mall in the suburb of Smyrna, half an hour northwest of Atlanta’s downtown. “It’s not aarea,” Pack said, of the location. But it’s not particularly crime-ridden. The storage center holds a lot of valuable stuff.
The company took further precautions, installing bulletproof glass windows surrounded by chicken wire and more dead bolts. Thieves came again, in August, but took just a few lenses, worth around five thousand dollars. The extra security seemed to help. “We got better,” Pack said. “But now we have to spend five or ten minutes locking and unlocking. It’s a real pain in the ass.”
, in large part because of an irresistible irony: “Lupin” is about a master burglar. But, in that case, a group of as many as twenty young people reportedly threw fireworks at the “Lupin” crew in broad daylight, then grabbed hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment. What happened in the Atlanta area in the past year and a half seems to reflect a greater degree of planning and foresight.
The studio owner has a theory about who else might be involved in the thefts. “It’d have to be somebody who gets around to a lot of places, like an A.C. or a P.A.,” he told me, meaning an assistant cameraperson or a production assistant. “Those are most of the people I work with.” He figures that an A.C. or a P.A. was “giving info to someone else and getting a kickback.” The studio owner has also come to realize that his Instagram posts may have been ill-advised.
Pack shared a similar story. “This wannabe music-video director was sending an A.C. I know these texts and pictures, saying, ‘Hey, I have this camera, and I’ve got these lenses,’ ” he said. “ ‘Do you got anything going you can use and shoot with, because I can rent this stuff to you.’ ” The items had the company’s stickers on them, which were visible in the pictures, Pack said.
