The stars were out in broad daylight over San Diego today. The brightest one being actor Tom Cruise. He and his "Top Gun: Maverick" co-stars flew in to celebrate the sequel 36 years after the first movie. Here's KPBS Military reporter Steve Walsh
The long awaited"Top Gun: Maverick" had its official premiere at locations around the city Wednesday. The headquarters for naval aviation played a starring role in the new"Top Gun: Maverick." Sailors started assembling outside the Base theater, hours before the cast was set to arrive. Seaman Recruit Charles Poindexter called his dad right away when he found out he was coming.When Tom Cruise and the other filmmakers arrived I asked why come back to San Diego when Top Gun hasn’t been here in decades.He said he wanted to show what it was really like to be in naval aviation.
“When we look at these aircraft and what it takes to fly these aircraft. For the first time people are going to watch this movie and have a real understanding of that skill set, that physical endurance and power that a lot of people really understand," he said."And just how impressive they are, the men and women.”
There were actually three premieres happening around San Diego Wednesday. Another event on the USS Midway and one at the civic Center downtown. This film was four years in the making with COVID-19 delaying the release.
