Analysis | Johnny Depp testified in his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard last week. The trial — which is being live streamed on the Internet for all the world to see and consume — has prompted nothing short of a media circus.

The case's high-profile nature, paired with the sensational coverage of unpleasant details, is a remarkable instance of public engagement with the private lives of movie stars — more access than the paparazzi, and far less flattering than Instagram.

"Johnny Depp is giving, literally, a lesson in acting every time he gets up on the stand," said Paula Todd, a journalism professor at York University and lawyer from Toronto. Watching the network's coverage, it would be easy to mistake the proceedings for a wrestling match. Anchors assure the audience that during a "brief intermission" they're "not gonna miss a thing." After a particularly salacious detail, they ask, "Can it get any worse? Tune in later to find out." Court TV did not respond to an interview request in time.

"I do think it's helping [Depp]," Todd said. "I do think it's engendering public sympathy for him, because people like him as a performer."When asked about drug use, he told the court that he offered singer Marilyn Manson a pill "so that he would stop talking so much." In response to a video where Depp could be heard acting erratically, he said, "I did assault a couple of cabinets, but I did not assault Ms. Heard.

Who gives a shit

Sounds like the only one missing from this is Saul Goodman. 🙄

Yes amber Heard is definitely a circus animal. CancelAmberHeard

Celebrities mean nothing to me

Defund the Trudeau network

Media is a circus. Jeffery Epstein's girlfriend passes through the justice system without a peep, but Jack Sparrows wife turns out to be a cunt & that gets 24/7 media coverage.

There are far more serious and interesting things to watch than a he said/she said court fight between two privileged celebrity adults.

Today, I ordered my new bike... You know the difference between your post & mine? No difference. Nobody care. Stop making stupid people famous.

Ghislaine Maxwell case wasn't live streamed...🤔 both seemed to have very high public interest...

It’s a complete waste of time and air.

Just the two of them are very sad sad individuals

The media is a circus everyday. Especially the biased media here in Canada.

Gislaine maxwell trial should have been televised

Mega pints 🍻

Sounds more like cbcnews is trying to deflect from the fact that it shows that abuse has no gender by labeling it a circus.

Correction: It’s now a defecation case.

Quite the show. I guess the problem the CBC has with it is that the woman is coming out of it looking terribly.

Why does this NEED to be broadcasted We are in a mess due to reality TV and the preoccupation with gossip. Who the hell cares.

Who gives a monkey’s uncle

And then there’s people with real problems… 🙄🙄

Here's one: what does Amber Heard in Johnny Depp's bed and the Toronto Maple Leafs in the playoffs have in common? ...

Calling for a moratorium on 'media circus.'

I don’t know why there even is a trial. Isn’t “believe all women” the end all be all? Is there such a thing as a lying woman 😂😂😂😂

They both are troubled. But she more than him. Nasty piece of work.

Analysis Quel surprise
