Justin Bieber owned the crowd from the moment he walked onto the Gainbridge Fieldhouse stage. And then, naturally, he soared above it in a giant inflatable jet — the first of several flights pulled off in a variety of complicated ways throughout a nearly two-hour performance Thursday night. It's the grandiosity only a handful of true hitmakers can manage without veering into parody.
The hits drew deafening shrieks, especially for"Baby." The women to my left may have done permanent damage, which was their right, and the balcony shook in an almost distressing way. Shout out to the pair a few rows ahead of me in the balcony who wore matching"my mama don't like you" shirts. A great shirt for a great moment.
Perhaps fueled by the ripped-jean folk, the energy was at a top level all night except for one truly confusing moment at the end of the show. Bieber, sitting at a pristine white piano, opened his encore with an extended instrumental jam with his fantastic band. I was into it, but I could see people fading a bit.
Bieber would go on to introduce the band, then his dozen or more dancers, then the crew who worked to set up his elaborate staging and lights. I half expected him to thank the Starbucks on Washington Street for the tea someone grabbed for him before the show.
