“I’ve worked and lived in the Downtown Eastside for the last 10 or so years,” Nyx says. “And this project is both a labour of love and a drive to protect the heritage of the neighbourhood.”
“I’ve called it my home and community for so long. And I think, at some point in time, I stumbled upon an art scene,” Nyx explains. For the project’s first album release in late 2019, Nyx put the word out to local artists that a DTES music project was in the works.“The Downtown Eastside, you have to understand, it’s not entirely this place of doom and gloom and horror,” Nyx says. “There is a community pre-existing down here.”With the project, Nyx aimed to highlight that community by creating a professionally produced album that could take their music beyond the streets.
release features music from 10 artists: Robert Williams; East Van Hotbox; Technition Cardinal; Ion Storm; Chaos Disorder and Panic; Big City; Iceman; Tangent Quo; D’Skyz; and Karen Colville.Available by Incidental press this Friday, the 100 Block Rock II LP will be limited to 200 copies on black vinyl for US$20 and 100 copies on yellow-and-black vinyl for US$25, which will also feature artist posters and inserts created by community artist Alan Sayers, who also did the album artwork.
