Letter: Scott in Salt Lake City writes that he's against spending money on public art that lacks creativity, good design sense, proper placement, and overall interest — like a landlocked whale.

I think our local arts councils need to be shaken up a bit and replaced with people who possess at least a modicum of appreciation for good design — rather than those who get excited when the Hobby Lobby coupons arrive.

Just wishing I could sit at the circle after every ice/snow storm waiting for some errant SUV to center punch the whale circle. No cause I'm anti whale art, but cause it'd be a sight.

Bring back the gnomes!!!

Withholding judgment until I see it in person, but it coulda been way worse. If you think it’s bad.

Public art doesn't please everyone. Nor should it. Of course , having a sense of humor and wonder helps.

Alas, going up or down 9th south (the most common direction of travel), it looks like a flying phallus - not a whale.

ClementYChow We love the whale!

It's an attempt to make the neighborhood like the Fremont neighborhood in Seattle.

The last sentence is just mean. Your local arts council has a board which chooses the public art. It's a **volunteer** position and the board members are often well-established artists and experts. If you have an interest, put your name in the ring to volunteer.

so obviously he doesn't know what art is..?

Scott misses the irony of his opinion. Long live art!

The citizens should vote for the art placed around the city

I for one, love the landlocked whale. The argument we don’t have whales here so shouldn’t have whale art is silly- I haven’t seen any giant gnomes around either yet many think THAT would have been a better choice? Lighten up folks, life is short. Enjoy the vibrant new décor.

Yeah true, if you go around the world you almost never see any whale sculptures.

Sometimes the answer the question of “why?” regarding art is simply “why not?” Whether you like The Whale or not is has done it’s job because it has made the viewer think about their relationship with art “do I like this?” “Why/why not?” “what type of art do I like?” etc.

How about a 20 ft tall, multi-colored saguaro cactus?

I feel like some people don’t understand art, or maybe even joy. 😆

hobby lobby coupons is too funny

I am so pleased about the whale.

The whale is a great piece of public art

The fuss over this whale is ridiculous.

This article is garbage. You forget you don’t have to like an artists art for it to be art. If you hate the whale, fine. I get that not a lot of people understand it’s significance as to why it was chosen, but it was and it’s done. Get over it.

… it’s a roundabout.

I feel bad for the whale haters

I was indifferent to the Whale, but now that its exposing elitist snobbery, I’m all in!

😂🤣😂

It's hilarious to me how much pushback the whale is getting, because the whale is such a cool piece of art. And the discussion it's generating feels like part of the point.
