Oakland A’s lose to Philadelphia Phillies, but individual players show they won’t roll over this year.

It’s going to be a long season for the Oakland A’s.

A losing year is to be expected. After trading Matt Olson, Matt Chapman, Chris Bassitt and Sean Manaea and letting Mark Canha walk in free agency, the A’s are, by their own admission, in a down period of their player cycle. For baseball fans, the A’s opener showed that while Oakland may struggle as a team this year, there are individual performances that should make the club worth watching.

A Kyle Schwarber leadoff home run and a troublesome, four-run fourth inning mired a solid performance for the 29-year-old ace. In five innings, Montas struck out six batters on 92 pitches.
