Big Day Out founder Ken West, who died on Thursday, knew better than most how to put on a show

Sunshine belted down on the 2006 Big Day Out, not in its traditional home at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds, but Princes Park where Ken West’s travelling roadshow spent a couple of years.

Starting in 1992 at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, where the first Big Day Out crowd witnessed Nirvana rocketing to global fame, this was a festival unlike any Australia had seen.Iggy Pop first headlined the next year, when Sonic Youth, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine and Seattle rockers Mudhoney shared the first outdoor stages where thousands of music fans would gather every summer.

“He wasn’t your normal promoter, he was a creator and on top of that, he was a real provocateur, he wanted people to think about what they were doing. Kim Salmon, who crisscrossed the country with Beasts of Bourbon, the Scientists and the Surrealists for many years playing BDO shows, says, “Ken was amazingly approachable, down to earth, and he helped so many people out” over more than three decades in the music industry.
