'Kulning': Swedish cow calling gets a new lease on life Scandinavian cattle-calling 'kulning' used to call cattle has grown in popularity in recent decades with music schools embracing it.

Karin Lindstrom, a voice coach, demonstrates the vocal technique known as kulning, which developed in central Sweden in the Middle Ages and is used to call cattle back to small seasonal farms, in the countryside of Gnesta, Sweden, on 12 June 2021.

Sweden’s culture department has recently said it will nominate the culture of seasonal farms such as the one in Arvselen where the vocal technique of kulning is practiced, to be added to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage in 2023.
