After wrapping the Heard It in a Past Life tour in October 2019, Rogers relocated from New York to the Maine coast and “cut herself off from the noise of the outside world,” according to a statement. This change of location allowed her to channel “the frenetic intensity of the last two years of her life, bringing her bracing honesty to stories of anger and peace and self-salvation, transcendence through sex and freedom through letting go.
Amid all of the work on the album, Rogers also found time to enroll in a graduate program at Harvard Divinity School, where she is “studying the spirituality of public gatherings and the ethics of power in pop culture,” according to a September 2021
