Will Smith Apologizes to the Academy in Best Actor Acceptance Speech

Smith won for his portrayal of Serena and Venus Williams’ father in the drama King Richard over Javier Bardem, Andrew Garfield, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Denzel Washington. He was joined at the Oscars by his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who was the target of a G.I. Jane II joke from Rock.

In this business you got to be able to have people disrespecting you. And you got to smile, you got to pretend like that’s okay. Richard Williams, and what I loved — thank you, Dee — Denzel said a few minutes ago, at your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you. It’s like, I want to be a vessel for love. I want to say thank you to Venus and Serena. I just spit, I hope they didn’t see that on TV.

This guy needs help, now he wants to makes jokes, doesn't matter how much he cried. He attacked a colleague, over a joke, why nobody attacked Ricky Gervais when he trash the whole Hollywood scene

Also his love made me do it bs are actually triggering words for a lot of women. He should’ve meditated on his speech a little more and ya know an apology to the entire world would’ve been good. As a woc that’s not how I want the world to see an American (wealthy) Black man.

He committed a crime by assaulting someone on air (even if Chris Rock was gracious enough not to press charges). He is a “role model” to a lot of young people and should NOT be rewarded by being allowed back. There needs to be more accountability for people’s actions.

Will needs to get help. He could have sat in his seat & said - take my wife's name out of your mouth & he would have been in the right. But in hitting Chris Rock, he crossed a line that showed he's still not okay with what he experienced as a kid - & he needs help.
