Even before the slap heard ‘round the world — when Will Smith stormed his way to the stage in the middle of Chris Rock’s pre-presentation speech to hit the stand-up in the face for a joke the latter made at Jada Pinkett Smith’s expense — it was the Chaos Oscars.
As I stated earlier in the night, eliminating eight categories from the live show, then incorporating clips of the winners onstage, was a smart strategy for a ceremony that’s supposed to celebrate filmmaking while serving as a three-hour-plus piece of entertainment regularly interrupted by ads.
But these positive tweaks were unfortunately counterbalanced by a raft of poor choices, too: presenters from the worlds of music and sports with tenuous connections to cinema, pandering anniversary celebrations of movies everyone has seen and most dispiritingly, two head-scratchingly presented Twitter polls that the ceremony seemed embarrassed to actually give too much screen time to.
If the Oscars forecasters were pretty dead on with their predictions, leading to no real upsets, it still made for an unpredictable ceremony, if only because it was hard to know what the ceremony would throw at us in the next couple of minutes.
What world are we living in?! How does someone who committed an indefensible assault then get to sit back down, enjoy more of the show& then win an award& get a standing ovation? Will Smith's toxic masculinity was a disgrace. Kudos to Chris Rock for handling it with such dignity.
Maybe on one hand but on the other, I think people will appreciate and respect the truth within CODA and why it won. Thank you kindly.
