At $45 million, Olga Tennison’s is one of the largest single gifts to an Australian university in history and will guarantee that La Trobe University’s world-class autism research centre is funded in perpetuity.

“She had a family connection to autism and I got the sense there was a deep sense of frustration that there wasn’t enough understanding about autism,” Professor Dissanayake said. Married to journalist and author Patrick Tennison, who co-founded the Melbourne Press Club, the couple lived a modest life, saving wrapping paper, paper clips and sticky tape, the same as many other children of the depression.
