Manchester United icons Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney clashed back in 2004 after the latter decided to hide the television remote on the eve of his first away game for the club

Wayne Rooney insisted he earned Roy Keane 's respect at Manchester United after a trivial quarrel about a remote control - but the latter insists this did nothing to improve his opinion of his former teammate.

Keane was club captain at the time and enjoying a game of rugby league on television when the new arrival snatched the remote so he could watch The X Factor. Speaking in 2018, Rooney claimed an "argument" ensued but he earned the respect of his skipper in the process. While Rooney was under the impression Keane was impressed by his bold actions, the former Republic of Ireland midfielder subsequently poured cold water on suggestions they had an "argument" - or that the episode made him respect the young forward. "We certainly didn't have an argument, let me tell you," Keane told Sky Sports' The Football Show in 2020. "I like my rugby league and yeah, someone did change the channel and I wasn't happy.
