Eternals star Gemma Chan is set to star in an upcoming Anna May Wong biopic, following the journey of Hollywood’s first Chinese-American movie star. Recognized for being a global style trendsetter and for her filmography, Wong first launched her acting career during the silent era of film, appearing in around 60 films between 1919 and 1960.
Now, according to THR, Chan and Fruitvale Stations' producer Nina Yang Bongiovi are working together to develop the biopic of the internationally recognized actress. In collaboration with Working Title Films, Chan will also be starring as the trailblazing icon Wong. In a statement, Chan revealed the importance of Wong’s journey to stardom as she was faced with many challenges and prejudice within the industry in the early 20th century.
“Her talent and her exploration of her art both in and outside of the U.S. was groundbreaking — and the challenges and prejudice she faced in the early 20th century as an actress speak directly to the conversations and the world we are navigating today.”In 2021, Chan paid tribute to the film star of Hollywood’s golden era, dedicating her Met Gala look to Wong, as her legacy has paved the way for Asian representation and diversity in the entertainment industry.
