Jersey City’s newest celebrities, members of the St. Peter’s University men’s basketball team, got a hometown sendoff with a police escort Wednesday night as they headed to Philadelphia for the Sweet 16.

Both devoted fans and ones who jumped on the bandwagon a week ago when Saint Peter’s stunned Kentucky, came to get a glimpse of the young men who have brought a spotlight to Jersey City and to offer a hero’s sendoff. The team has the nation’s longest current winning streak at 9 and just the third No. 15 seed to reach the Sweet 16.

Dasher is the only player on the team from Jersey City, and his family was amongst the loudest at the sendoff, cheering all the way until the bus, escorted by Jersey City police cruisers, turned the corner. Players bopped their heads along to cheers from inside the bus and some filmed the crowd of fans with just a tinted window between them.
