Richard Linklater has explained how his new movie Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood connects thematically with Harry Potter. Linklater is an Academy Award-nominated writer and director known for films including his coming-of-age picture Boyhood, which was shot over the course of a 12-year period. Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood is his latest film and is set to be released onto Netflix on April 1, 2022.
Linklater's films are renowned for their distinct style, often using loose narratives and focussing on the effects of time. They have previously explored the experience of childhood and the process and challenges associated with growing up. Carrying on with this theme, Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood will center on the experience of a young child as he is recruited to join a covert NASA mission.
“I thought of that fantasy I had of being recruited, it’s almost like a Harry Potter thing… every kid has that fantasy that maybe you’re special, you have some role to play in the world that could be helpful.” While Linklater's movies aren't aimed at children or adolescents, and they certainly aren't as accessible as the Harry Potter books and films, the director's comparison seems apt. Part of what made the Harry Potter series so successful was the way it allowed its audience to indulge in the fantasy of an ordinary life turning into something magical and extraordinary.
Audiences will no doubt initially focus on the film's unique aesthetic and will be introduced for the first time to rotoscoping. Linklater will hope that the film can avoid being overshadowed by its visuals and that its story and themes can be treated with the same seriousness as a non-animated feature.
