with Smollett—to stage the hate crime, apparently in an attempt to raise Smollett’s public profile. Following his arrest, Smollett was written offThroughout the trial, Smollett maintained his innocence, saying that he only paid the brothers $3,500 for training sessions and fitness advice. According to, he and Abimbola went to a Chicago bathhouse where they “did more drugs and, like, made out.

It took the jury nine hours of deliberation to convict Smollett on five of six felony charges. In a press conference after the sentencing,Smollett’s brother, told reporters he was disappointed with the result. “He shamed my brother,” Jojo said in regard to Linn. “He spoke about his arrogance. Unfortunately for the actor and his family, Smollett’s legal troubles are far from finished. In April 2019, the city of Chicago filed a lawsuit against Smollett after the actor refused to pay the city $130,106.15 to cover the police investigation. In the suit, the Chicago Department of Law said that more than two dozen police officers and detectives worked on Smollett’s case for weeks in 2019, racking up 1,836 overtime hours. In November 2020, Smollett filed a countersuit.

“You took away a lot of resources from other places, from other real victims of real crimes,” Linn said to Smollett, “and used up the police resources for your own benefit. And that’s a big problem here.”
