Jerry Springer is well aware that his raucous talk show was silly, but he has no regrets.
Springer, 78, compares the show to chewing gum, saying, “It isn’t going to save the world, but it’s not going to kill you either.” Springer notes that the hit series had “a democratic quality to it” in that it introduced real, gritty people to American television.“‘Seinfeld,’ ‘Frasier,’ ‘Friends,’ it was always well-scrubbed-looking, upper middle class people. And that was it, and all of a sudden my show comes on,” he tells us.
During that time where Ricki Lake and Jenny Jones had their thing, this made sense. And let's be honest, who didn't watch? It was the Jersey Shore of its time.
It was more than stupid, it was destructive. It promoted violence. People in other countries saw the Jerry Springer show and believed that most of the USA was like that.
