, Campbell plays multiple characters. She read the book and quickly realised the gig was vastly different to movie work. “I’m used to reading scripts which you read in two or three hours; of course, it was four or five days. You’ve got to read [it] and do all that highlighting and making notes along the way: their accent, their age, notes about the characters. I had over 30 characters!”
“In total contrast to his stage persona, he was the sweetest, gentlest man with a heart of gold. I saw him as a big baby. He was wonderful with the fans would always ask their names, where they were from and [was] up for a chat.” The idea was to create a nightclub that wasn’t a disco. “You had to be able to have a conversation on the main floor. We controlled that. Downstairs there was another bar and a dance floor and a seating area. We wanted it to be like you were in someone’s sitting room, like a gentleman’s club …”
“Tina would have fabulous ideas … Let’s face it, it was more interesting talking to the mothers than the people. Also, you know what stars are like – they’ve got their publicists, they are so guarded.” She interviewed celebrity mothers across a range of disciplines for the column: Venus and Serena Williams, Oliver Stone, Damien Hirst.
