A Tennessee school district has voted to ban the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel 'Maus,' which is about the Holocaust, due to 'inappropriate language' and an illustration of a nude woman.

ATHENS, Tenn. -- A Tennessee school district has voted to ban a Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Holocaust due to"inappropriate language" and an illustration of a nude woman, according to minutes from a board meeting.

Art Spiegelman won the Pulitzer Prize in 1992 for the work that tells the story of his Jewish parents living in 1940s Poland and depicts him interviewing his father about his experiences as a Holocaust survivor. The minutes from the school board meeting indicate objections over some of the language used in"Maus." At first, Director of Schools Lee Parkison suggested redacting it"to get rid of the eight curse words and the picture of the woman that was objected to."

"It shows people hanging, it shows them killing kids, why does the educational system promote this kind of stuff? It is not wise or healthy," School Board Member Tony Allman said about the book, which was part of the district's eighth-grade English language arts curriculum.

Tennessee school district needs to be educated.

Never heard of it til now, and now I'm interested in reading it. Good job, abc7.

Ummm…It’s written as a comic book style. It depicts hanged children and kids being murdered. Those are facts, yes, but it can be taught w/out graphic comic style pics. Of course media would have an issue with anyone opposing this vileness. Our society really is headed wrong way

there is no other way to talk about genocide no matter with jewish people, irishmen, rwandans, and even armenians and especially american indians. what happened is awful but there is no other way to explain it they are teaching fiction and antisemitism cause now

Because they aren’t on tik tok or youtube seeing way crazier shit…ohkay.

' Inappropriate language ' illustration of a nude woman 🤷‍♀️. If only parents knew what their kids do , say and watch with their friends 😈.

Yeah…that’s why

“The McMinn County School Board decided Jan. 10 to remove 'Maus' from its curriculum, news outlets reported.” Dropped from the reading list =\\= banned

The safer the kids are the more useless they become.

Tennessee School Board Bans Holocaust Graphic Novel ‘Maus' – Author Art Spiegelman Condemns the Move as ‘Orwellian'‘Maus’ author Art Spiegelman spoke to CNBC after a school board in Tennessee voted to ban his landmark graphic novel about the Nazis’ persecution of Jews. GOP Soviet-style thought police…. These are 8th graders. The atrocities of the Holocaust are worse than a few curse words. Do they not realize what 8th graders see online by that age? Total idiots on that Board. They should've been made to visit a Holocaust museum before their vote. Don't learn, doomed to repeat. CNBC The education system is going to have the internet teaching our children. they will search for the things they want to know and hopefully where they find it is coming from a place of intelligence and not ignorance. its not the 50s anymore you cant remove everything you dont like.
