This week, legendary rocker Neil Young gave Spotify an ultimatum to protest Joe Rogan's vaccine misinformation: 'They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.' Spotify quickly made its choice—Rogan.

number one on its charts in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Spotify didn’t give Rogan a reported $100 million in a noble effort to spearhead a public health campaign. It gave him the money to be his freewheeling, contrarian, and almost constantly controversial self. He’s a shock jock. Spotify knew what it was buying in May 2020.

No disrespect to Neil Young, but he was never going to move the needle here. Ever. Even if he got other artists on board to boycott Spotify, it’s unlikelycoalition would have the desired effect. First of all, there are practical roadblocks, as musicians are rarely the owners of their own music. Young didn’t actually have the ability to remove his albums, and had to get permission from his label to do so; it’s far from a given that the major labels would do the same for their contemporary stars.

Remember: Twitter only dumped President Trump when he was a lame duck. And Twitter hadn’t paid Trump $100 million to exclusively appear on its platform. Even if Spotify’s C-suite develops a raging guilty conscience over Rogan encouraging young people not to get the Covid-19 vaccine, it wouldn’t be able to moderate his content without implicating itself as a publisher in addition to admitting its responsibility as a platform.

Spotify started out with music, but it has thundered into the podcasting space, pouring hundreds upon hundreds of millions into a remarkably efficient effort to unseat Apple and establish itself as the premiere destination for podcasts. It paid $340 million for the podcast network Gimlet Media in 2019 and nearly $200 million for The Ringer in 2020, as part of this blitz. When people listen to music on Spotify, the streamer has to pay a third party .

Not all health care professionals! Students, vets, not many real doctors! Media smear campaign.

He is an honest guy, not the brightest but speaks his mind and admits when he is wrong. He has some misconception about vaccines but don't we all? Stop this cancel culture

Who cares!!! If people cannot take the truth the don't listen to spotify!

good

Did y’all ever hear the story of Neil Young going up on stage with a big ol Cocaine bugger?

At this point, just lock the anti-vaxxers out of hospital care and let them suffer. Don’t trust the medical establishment with the vaccine? Then don’t trust the hospital when you get COVID.

lol only 240? When 16000 Health professionals Said Ivermectin works well.. Yeah so few are shit at what they do

Whatever happened to people listening to things and making their own choices?

Well i'll drop my spotify subs.. with my friend, to spotify only cares money so... good bye spotify, and FU stupid animal

So much money at stake. What about all the pod casters?

Clearly Wired would like to participate in cancel culture...so I'm cancelling Wired. Unfollowed.

i remember a time when there was freedom, and if we didn't like something,we didn't want destroy it.

270 health professionals? Do some more digging. There was vets, phds, engineers, lawyers. You should also put a label on posts like these: misinformation.

270 isn't significant

sometimes a choice isn't about leverage; it could be about values, principles, or taste. however, consequences are always entwined with judgment. and, repercussions have all the time in the world.

Who are these so called ' health care proffesionals'? Half of them are not even real medical doctors. And how about the thousands doctors who do not agree with the mainstream propaganda?!

Joe Rogan is not the bad guy here; The real enemy is Joseph Goebbels

ThankYouSpotify ThankYouJoeRogan ❤️💛💙 Spotify is the last bastions of freespeech in a world where platforms are now the guardians of truth and *accepted language*. Luckily, Spotify is an European company, otherwise Joe would be cancelled by now. 🖖

Neil who. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Heart Of GOLD + Harvest MOON = Neil YOUNG!

We'd better remove all Religious TV stations and radio programmes too. If it's about discussion with lack of evidence.

I must admit I’m impressed by how this whole thing has been pretty civil on both sides of the fence (those for and those against) from what I’ve seen and read so far. It gives me hope we’ll relearn to listen to one another and to agree to disagree.

Look - Neil Young is shit and and I wont lose sleep over not listening to Joni Mitchell's 10 or so decent tracks. Without recent articles I wouldnt know who Joe Rogan was anyway. News over - let's get back to Boris. See GMB .

The letter was a fraud.

A poor unlettered who uses an 'inattentive' system like Spotify which, in order to protect his investment, lets him talk about things he doesn't know. Rogan bannspotify

No shit. They already paid for a contract. The guy puts out a 3 Hour podcast that does massive numbers across every demographic every day and goes viral damn near every day. They're not giving that up.

Good.

Rogan’s the only reason I have the app!

I mean they just paid how much for him? I don’t think he’s going anywhere for a while.

Has his podcast grown? Bet it has.

Of course, that is quite obvious. This whole thing is not about right or wrong, or even about any ideals, it's about business, it's about money. Spotify would only change something if the negative impact of Joe Rogan's podcast meant too much financial loss 🤷

Why don’t you tell us who is behind those 270 signatures. There’s a reason why you have reported this. 🙄

It's clear by the replies I see here that nobody is listening to the podcast in question. How about making a decision AFTER you listen to the show? Quit being another sheep!

Give it some time… this ain’t over.

He’s not even a musician and he has a music platform by the balls 🤦🏼‍♀️ ☄️😷

270 veterinarians and rat droppings inspectors

Neil guy is not Spotify exclusive. Joe Rogan on the other hand is exclusive to Spotify. That's why it's their responsibility to carry out their promise. Swedish based companies know better than these modern day silicon valley companies

16M+ subscribers versus 1M+ ... Young is meaningless on the platform. Zero pull ... and an idiot to boot.

It's all about the bottom line, and companies can't catch COVID.

Nor should it. They only spent 100 million on a guy who gets 11 million views per show. He gets more people in a single episode than those people combined in an entire month.

Makes no sense to me that a UFC commentator has such a following. Weird times.

Doesn’t Apple podcasts also contain vax misinformation? Don’t most podcast platforms? Is there a misinformation-free platform?

What an interesting picture you chose. You don't happen to have a side in this as a news organization, do you?

DropifySpotify

Just removed Spotify from my phone. Simple decision.

That is the point of the protest yes. The fact that Spotify wont drop a podcast that has probably killed thousands by proxy is why people are disgusted.

I signed up spotify mainly for Joe rogan.. if he is gone..i unsubscribe

They put too much money in Rogan. They are not going to lose money like that. Plus losing a Niel Young isn't gonna hurt them. Now if they lost Adele or a Drake that's a different story

Its nice to know no matter how many lies & deceptions CNN, FOX etc spout they're never held accountable. They are the arbiters of truth, unassailable & infallible..

I think Rogan is an absolute douche bag (who often has cool guests who make his show enjoyable). That said, why are people not capable of ignoring shit that they disagree with? If you don’t like his COVID position, don’t listen. God, we’re a country of babies (left and right).

This is because eldsjal has decided that the money to be made by promoting anti-vax, bigotry and conspiracy theories is more than if he doesn't. It's a huge market. If people die as a a result; *shrug*, he made bank and they should have been smarter; ethics costs way too much.

Then we should boycott Spotify ‘s advertisers. We know all businesses are beholden to the highest bidder .. that’s why they are not “people”.. although to be fair, it seems these days most people are like that too (sadly)

Then let's all drop Spotify

'health care professionals'

MoneyOverLives ThisIsTheRight

Everyone is just mad that Joe Rogan is beating them at their own misinformation campaign.

As many tell and expose the plans of Trump and his coup plotting republicans to the Jan.6 Committee. Republicans are now spreading lies about President Biden's coming Supreme Court selection. A qualified Black female judge selection, causes republicans to use racist lies AGAIN!

Of course not. If he valued human life, he wouldn't be doing what he does.

Very serious and dangerous behavior by spotify. I closed my subscription and switched to Apple Music (much better). BoycottSpotify

Duh. Money over everything!

So Neil Young just fucked his fans who use Spotify to make the point that he trusts medical professionals and supports vaccination?

I don’t see the problem the main stream media spout enough nonsense are people calling this to be banned… if people don’t like what they are hearing turn it off

Joni Mitchell and Brene Brown too. Will be interesting to see how many others stand up against vaccine disinformation and walk out on Spotify.

If they’re going to drop him, they should do so because of his racial hatred. The only thing he’s said about vaxxes is he doesn’t think young ppl need it and he took Ivermectin when he got Covid. Being angrier about than the other is gross.

Excellent

Maybe Neil Young and the 270 health journalists/PHDs should listen to the over 15,000 actual Medical Doctors that have signed the Great Barrington Declaration and start questioning the actions of public health officials who are clearly drunk on power.

Wired Should Never Be Calling For Censorship

Good, out with the old and in with the new. I wonder if the people Young sold his music to will take action against him for loss of income?

Time to Drop Spotify.

They chose wrong: they chose lies over truth.

Glad I never used Spotify anyway.

Why has no media mentioned that Neil Young is a failed tech entrepreneur? Per he attempted to launch a Spotify competitor with dubious snake oil claims. Perhaps people deserve to have that context?

He canceled himself, and leftists are mad that a pirate company dares to disobey their cause by saying no to cancel culture.

It’s wrong to spread vaccine misinformation and it is potentially deadly. Show support for what is right by temporarily suspending subscription to Spotify. I have. Don’t cancel people. Give them a time out until they start making sense again.

Young getting taste of his own medicine. And it was pretty dumb of him to go against Joe Rogan... I mean he's very big to cancel.

Why would Spotify drop Joe Rogan? Seriously. Because Neil Young is not a fan? Who cares. There’s 100 more controversial podcasts on Spotify than Rogan’s. Just turn the channel. It’s not hard.

Let´s see if all those 'conscient artists' out there have the balls to do the same.

greed= profit over people greedKILLS

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Right for music, Wrong for all

Imagine you buy Neil Young’s music rights for $500,000,000 and then shortly later he gets your music removed from one of the worlds premier music platforms. I’d sue.

I disagree with him frequently and think his fanbase is insane/braindead.. But no company is getting rid of their cash cow because of being a potential misinformation feed.

It was awkward to watch. Like when you say, 'Maybe we should take a break.' And she quickly Sharpies 10 names on her calendar.

Well it makes sense. Rogan’s customer is likely younger than a Neil Young listener, making it a better investment. Rogan has new material more often than Young, so listeners are tuning in more often, which is a better sell to advertisers. But women spend more than Rogan fans.

Our Spotify choices *were* misinformation or “Rockin’ in the Free World”. *listening to “Rockin’ in the Free World” on Apple Music* Really. Right now.

Regardless if you’re pro-vax, anti-vax or a unicorn, the world’s gone mad with cancel culture. Unless it’s deemed hate speech, we should be free to listen to what and who we want to make up our own minds

A company should not bend to pressure. That should be the correct stand point. Spotify is correct on this one. Issues should by resolved by discourse.

What “vaccine misinformation” is everybody referring to?

Because moronic clickbait and outrage porn makes money.

It wasn't an ultimatum. It was his reason. He said that right after he said 'Remove my music IMMEDIATELY.' Decision was already made.

And Young knew. He doesn't need the money but he and his family know the worth of vaccines. Well worth it for him to get the message out.

I can think of another country… Didn’t Neil Young sell the rights to his catalog ?
