Buttigieg told The Associated Press that new federal data will show another increase in traffic fatalities.

— Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is vowing to help stem rising traffic fatalities, releasing a broad-based strategy aimed at reducing speed, redesigning roads and boosting car safety features such as automatic emergency braking.

"Somehow it has become over the years and decades as normal, sort of the cost of doing business," he said."Even through a pandemic that led to considerably less driving, we continue to see more danger on our roads.

Lawmakers added a car safety provision to the infrastructure bill. But some say it still isn't enough. It pledges a shift in approach on the state and local level in part with planned updates to the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, which lays down the requirements for U.S. street markings and design. Among the possibilities is rethinking how speed limits are set. Currently, many cities set limits at whatever 85% of drivers are traveling, essentially letting drivers make the decision.

Traffic deaths began to spike in 2019, and the NHTSA blamed speeding and other reckless driving behavior for the increases during the coronavirus pandemic. Before then, the number of fatalities had fallen for three straight years.

Act? Like how?

Hmmm.

Lol

🤡

Is the administration shopping around for a defeat? Why does Mayor Pete think it's his job to fix car fatalities issue?

Lemme guess.. more 'free' public transit that everyone else will pay for.

We should probably ban cars

Is he going on another vacation?

Lower speed limits? No thanks.

Didn’t he run from a car accident… is that one of his suggestions?

Two words: more trains

I'd sure love to see viable public transit offerings in SoCal.

texting , texting , do something about texting & driving .

He's funny. More mandates coming.

Vows to “act” 🤣

Our roads are an absolute mess. Marijuana high drivers everywhere, drivers buried in their smart phones, and road rage everywhere. We need a ton more policing. Start revoking licenses. Burying your head in a phone and not watching the road should be as bad as a DUI.

Turns out not commuting for the last few years has made people even worse drivers.
