New images from Apple TV+ series Pachinko, based on the best-selling novel by Min Jin Lee, reveal a first look at the show's main characters.

New images from the Apple TV+ series Pachinko reveal its main cast, along with the announcement of its premiere date of March 25. The series will be headed by Oscar-winning actor Youn Yuh-jung, who came to global prominence after her acclaimed performance in 2020's Minari. The cast will be rounded out by a primarily Korean and Japanese cast including Lee Min-ho, Jin Ha, Anna Sawai, and Kaho Minami.

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Min Jin Lee, Pachinko will follow four generations of a Korean family living in Japan from 1910 to 1989, including Japan's occupation of Korea and the Second World War. Yuh-jing will play the oldest version of protagonist Sunja, whose journey to Japan will highlight the racial tensions of the period. Pachinko will be run by Soo Hugh, who previously wrote for The Terror on AMC.

Pachinko will be Apple's first series with a primarily Asian cast, following a recent uptick in Asian American and Pacific Islander visibility in the media, exemplified by shows like Squid Game and Never Have I Ever, both on Netflix. Apple has already made steps to increase onscreen visibility and diversity through its content, most notably through films such as CODA, which features deaf actors in the lead roles.

Pachinko is another example of a US entertainment industry working to tell new kinds of stories from people all over the world, after a long history of focussing on US- and Euro-centric projects. Following Parasite's historic win at the Academy Awards in 2019, there has been a noticeable increase in demand from audiences for work that is bold and challenging, while also exploring more diverse points of view that haven't often been given visibility in American media.
