There’s also a skew toward recency. Red Notice, Don’t Look Up and The Unforgivable have all come out within the last two months. And let’s not overlook The Kissing Booth 2, just inches away from a Martin Scorsese blockbuster.
But, the main story is Don’t Look Up at the moment, which should easily pass Bird Box by next week. It’sit ends up passing Red Notice to be the most viewed movie in Netflix history, just two months after that record was broken, but it’s unclear how much the pace of viewing may slow down now that the holidays have wrapped and other movies and shows are being released. Still, even if it ended its run tomorrow, these are massively impressive numbers for the movie.
There’s a lot of controversy about Netflix original movies in that critics say they have no real cultural impact. Red Notice bragged that these viewership hours made it on par with how many people have been watching Avengers movies. But are they talked about as much? Absorbed into the cultural lexicon? That’s the debate, and I’m not sure how many of these would be deemed genre classics .
Anyway, we’ll see what Don’t Look Up does over the next week, and how this list looks after new numbers come in.
