Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and Chike Ozah, two of his frequent collaborators, directed the film. If the outspoken West makes the trek to Park City expect him to dominate the coverage much as Taylor Swift did in 2020 when she premiered her own Netflix documentary at the festival.
“I was impressed that so much got made during this time and that the quality was so incredible,” says Kim Yutani, Sundance’s director of programming. “So much of the work we’re seeing reflects what we have collectively been through in the past couple of years,” says Yutani. “In this moment of turbulence and uncertainty we see a lot of work that’s questioning the world around us. One of the strands we see is a desire to fight the system and call into question establishments, institutions, and corporations.”
Sundance is moving forward with in-person screenings, but the emergence of the fast-spreading Omicron variant of COVID could complicate those plans. The Berlin Film Festival, for instance, has reportedly explored the possibility of delaying its February event as Europe deals with a surge in cases. Even before Omicron, Sundance had put certain safety measures in place. It requires attendees to show proof of vaccination and will mandate masks at screenings, for instance.
