Quick, which of the following describes Timothée Chalamet? He’s the brightest male star of his generation. He’s an actor who has been in a handful of independent hits but has never, on his own, in the classic sense, truly opened a movie.
By which I mean this: Imagine that Chalamet had come along 30 years ago. His star trajectory — the kinds of movies he’d be acting in, the kind of movie star he’d want to become — would probably be a lot more clearly delineated than it is today. We’re now, after all, in the post-movie-star age. Or, at least, in an era that doesn’t exactly mint movie stars.
There’s a grandeur to “Dune” that makes it a nice pedestal for Chalamet’s beautiful-boy cerebral magnetism. But there’s a fuzziness to the movie, a “Star Wars”-goes-to-the-art-house meditative quality that doesn’t do Chalamet any favors as an actor. I thought he had more force and heroic energy a couple of years ago in “” , a neo-Shakespearian royal-court historical-political swashbuckler in which he invested the young man who would be the king of England with a neurasthenic-rock-star allure.

I like him, but he’s in a group of actors that I just can’t ever see as anyone but themselves. They’re playing a recognizable version of themselves in every project; this chap, Jason Momoa, Robert Downey Jr. Never not themselves. Dune was bloody beautiful though, I loved it.

Don’t know anything about him. He has an interesting face though, like a model for a marble statue. Usually with movie stars, everyone knows who they are. For example, Leo DiCaprio. All you have to say to someone when talking about movies is “Leo” and people know who it is.
