William Shatner, who is best known for portraying Captian James T Kirk in Star Trek, has become the oldest person to enter space in the latest Blue Origin flight.

The 90-year-old was overcome with emotion after he touched down on Earth, saying his trip to space was the “most profound experience”.

Shatner, who is known for his role as Captain James T Kirk in Star Trek, officially became the oldest person to enter space, over 50 years after he first depicted space travel in the famous sci-fi television series. Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft took off around 1:45am with the crew inside the 18.3 metre spacecraft travelling 100 kilometres above the Earth’s surface where they enjoyed approximately four minutes of weightlessness before returning safely to Earth roughly 10 minutes after takeoff.

Shatner said the trip opened his eyes to the reality of space, adding it was something everyone should experience."To see the blue colour whip by and now you're staring into blackness, that's the thing.
