Filmmaker Haile Gerima was long unrecognized by the industry. Now, ahead of a master class and film academy retrospective in L.A., he sits down with Ava DuVernay to talk about the changing state of the movie business.

I was confronted by everything. Even your idea of desiring a girlfriend is contaminated by these movies’ empowering of blond hair, blue-eyed women. It affects all over the world. So I made a film called “The Death of Tarzan.

But what does it take — two, three years just to see how it feels to be every month on the floor with various projects? And right now, television and streaming allows for creators like me to be able to do that ...
