The one-off Jamaican legend helped invent reggae and dub, pioneering entire genres of music.

If you don’t know Perry’s work, suffice it to say: You might not be aware of it, but you’ve heard it. Perry had a hand in the creation of what would come to be known as roots reggae music and, perhaps more importantly, was some admixture of an alchemist and a magician in the studio, pioneering the creation of dub and unleashing soundscapes and production techniques that still blow minds today.

Other Perry-produced tracks would feature laughter, gunshots, smashing glass, animal sounds, and—most crucially—echo, bass, and space treated not merely as added-on effects to enhance existing instrumentation but as spooky, moody, vibrantly processed instrumentation of their own.

But about the legend that was his life: Born in northwest Jamaica in 1936, Perry decided early on that a life of toiling on farms was not for him. “There was nothing to do except fieldwork,” he said, “so I started playing dominoes and learned to read the minds of others.” As one does. He soon worked his way up the ladder at Kingston’s Studio One under the legendary Coxsone Dodd, starting by running errands and progressing to scouting talent and recording himself.
