"She was married to a man-child who couldn’t be bothered to step up and actually help her with the parenting and the adulting. She got fed up, and that’s why she got divorced. Perfectly justified. And as for Daniel’s suggestion that he watch the kids after school? Considering what an irresponsible man-child he has been up to that point, it’s understandable that she would be uncomfortable with the arrangement.
Maybe she could have done better with the custody arrangement, but then again, it’s not like she took full custody. She had the kids see him on weekends, which was kind of the norm back in the '90s. ... The reason she lets him watch the kids at the end of the movie is by then, his playing the 'Mrs Doubtfire' character caused him to grow up. I’m not saying she was perfect, but she really didn’t deserve the hate she got.
