Why Covid must share the blame for Hollywood’s summer movie box office woes:

quintupled its $39 million budget, and’s “underperformance” kickstarted a wave of late-2020 delays, its $363 million global cume remains an idealistic benchmark.

Hollywood knowingly held most of its biggies until after the summer. However, now the studios must determine if these underperformances from these far-from-surefire franchise flicks mean that the “safer” post-summer tentpoles are equally “doomed.” The easy answer would be to say that when going to the movies still causes some skittishness even among the vaccinated , many of these films were not seen as must-see-in-theaters flicks.

Under this notion, I don’t expect to see a flurry of date changes. Universal and Focus have mostly small flicks untilat Christmas. I’d expect Warner Bros. to ride out its “in theaters and on HBO Max in 2021” deal to the end. Disney may use the circumstances to continue their “Premier Access” strategy for
