ZZ Top may have enjoyed strong success in the 1970s, but the band managed to dominate the early ’80s thanks to their savvy understanding of MTV, building a very specific visual image through the new medium of music videos.
One other important element to the Texas band’s brand was a deep and abiding love for hot rods. This was more than lip service: guitarist Billy Gibbons in particular was a fan of classic metal and devoted a significant portion of his time to commissioning groundbreaking custom car builds. The most famous of these was Eliminator, a 1933 Ford coupe built by Pete Chapouris that featured a chopped top, a bright red paint job, and unmistakably ’80s graphics down the side.
Not only would Eliminator be featured on the cover of the 1983 album of the same name, but it played a starring role in the video for single “Gimme All Your Lovin'” — a song that helped make ZZ Top a household name. Eliminator was so beloved that it also became a Monogram model so kids too young to know anything about the trio’s pre-MTV career could assemble it while rocking out in their ’80s bedrooms. We’ll see Eliminator again before the end of this feature.
