Existenz was basically a reworking of Videodrome, which in turn was inspired by Philip K Dick. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that the director is also a fan of JG Ballard, whose surreal landscapes also seem to have been an influence on the look of Cronenberg's films. BSFA
