'I'm beautiful. I'm strong and loved. I'm a masterpiece. Just believe in it from the inside,' says MaryJBlige.

Listening to Mary J. Blige feels like a therapy session. For nearly three decades, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has graciously set aside her crown to become every Black woman’s homegirl, providing comfort through her music—even when she couldn’t enjoy comfort herself.but her breakthrough is attributed to her sophomore album,. Released in 1994, the record is a musical diary that sheds light on the artist’s growing depression, abusive relationship survival, and substance abuse.

That relationship is everything, because it starts with my mother being a child and my aunts, and growing up in a neighborhood where I didn't see a woman treated well. I could hear the next-door neighbors being beaten by their husbands. We lived in the projects, so you could hear everything. That relationship [between Black women] is strong and important, because I always wanted to help women in some way, somehow.

We're both from uptown New York, and we didn't grow up in a mindset of thinking we have to take care of ourselves. Are there any self-care practices that you do?
